Tyler Mahle, a right-handed pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds, has been the best Reds starter through the first month of the season (which is saying a lot considering the rotation also includes Luis Castillo and Sonny Gray).

Mahle has a 1.75 ERA and 2.81 FIP after five starts and 25.2 innings. He’s only given up two home runs while walking 11 batters and striking out 36.

His 35.3 percent strikeout percentage puts him in the top ten percent of all major league starters. His last two starts have been his most impressive of the season so far.

Mahle pitched 6.2 shutout innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks at home, allowing two hits and striking out nine batters.

He pitched five innings for the Dodgers on Monday, allowing one run on five hits.

This hasn’t always been the case with Mahle. In 2017, he exploded into the forefront with a 2.70 ERA in only 20.0 innings pitched.

He struggled to adjust to the league for the next two years, with his ERA lingering around 5.00 and his FIP in the mid-4.00 level.

Mahle continued to build on his success in 2020 by relying heavily on his fastball and slider in the first half of the year.

For the first time in the previous three seasons, his fastball has topped 94.7 mph in its average velocity.

Right-handed hitters, on the other hand, aren’t getting the majority of his fastballs, which are largely thrown to left-handers.

At the same time, he’s getting better at combining his pitches. While his fastball use has dropped to 55.9 percent, the percentage of times he throws his slider has increased to 31.4%.

Mahle’s spin rate has also risen this year compared to previous years. With his fastball, he’s seen a substantial increase in spin rate over the past two years, and it’s paying off.

His 31.4 percent whiff rate and 22 of his 36 strikeouts have come from his fastball, which he has used against 59 hitters thus far. He threw a fastball 30 times against 106 hitters last year.
