Nelson was selected in the 39th round of the 2007 Major League Baseball draft by the Cincinnati Reds out of Niceville High School in Niceville, Florida, but he did not sign and instead attended the University of Alabama.



He was 9-3 with a 4.01 ERA in 18 games as a junior in 2010. (17 starts). In the second round of the 2010 Major League Baseball draft, he was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Double-A Huntsville Stars were Nelson’s first stop in 2013. On June 5, he was promoted to the Nashville Sounds of the Triple-A Southern League.

On September 3, he was promoted to the majors, made his major league debut on September 6, and made his first start on September 28.

Nelson was named the top prospect on the Brewers and the 96th greatest prospect in baseball by Baseball America prior to the 2014 season.

Nelson started the year at Triple-A Nashville, where he went 10–2, with a 1.46 ERA, and 114 strikeouts while dominating the Pacific Coast League.

Nelson won the PCL Pitcher of the Year award in 2014.

Due to a brief injury to Yovani Gallardo on May 25, he made one spot start for the Milwaukee Brewers against the Miami Marlins and earned his first major league win, tossing 5+23 scoreless innings with 3 walks and 6 strikeouts.
