Jonathan was born on May 2, 1991, in the Dominican Republic. The Philadelphia Phillies first signed him as an international free agent before trading him to the Houston Astros. Jonathan played for the Astros from 2011 till July 2015.

Within that period, has was named the 94th best prospect in baseball by Baseball America. He also played for the Oklahoma City RedHawks in minor league baseball where he was also named the Astros’ minor league hitter for June. He also got promoted to the major leagues in July 2013.



In 2015, the Astros traded him to the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers traded him in 2019 to the Miami Marlins baseball team. The following year, he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays and in February 2021, the New York Mets signed a one-year contract of $3.55 million with him

He became a free agent at the end of the 2021 baseball season and in March 2022, the Chicago Cubs signed him on a one-year contract worth $6 million.
