One of the New England Patriots’ most valuable players was taken care of by the team before free agency week began. Reportedly worth $9 million over one year, veteran safety and impending free agency Devin McCourty was re-signed.
In addition to avoiding his old contract from becoming null and void on March 16, 2022, the new agreement will keep McCourty with the Patriots for at least one more season. In addition, New England was able to save money thanks to the re-signing of McCourty.
Over a five-year period, the Patriots paid McCourty a total of $1.25 million: his base pay, a roster bonus of $1 million, and a signing bonus of $6.75 million. On March 9, 2023, the first day of the NFL’s 2023 league year, the last four of those years will become null and invalid.
McCourty, 34, will earn the rumored $9 million, but will only count $5.75 million against New England’s salary cap this season.
Meanwhile, his cap number would have been $700,00 higher had he not been re-signed.
McCourty’s previous contract, signed in March of 2020, would have terminated and he would have become an unrestricted free agent if he had not been signed prior to the start of the 2022 league year.
This would have resulted in a $6.45 million charge to the Patriots’ books for the entirety of the signing bonus that was still outstanding from the said contract.
Despite the extension, that incentive will still be paid out over the course of the next three seasons as was initially agreed upon in 2020.
In the event that McCourty’s new one-year contract is nullified, the Patriots will be in the same position as they are in now in 2023, with two signing bonuses counting against the salary cap. If so, New England would have to pay $9.7 million to bring McCourty back.
