Will Smith went to Louisville, Kentucky’s Kentucky Country Day School. He hit.528 with 11 home runs and 36 RBIs as a senior in 2013, while also pitching to a 7–1 record and a 0.87 ERA.
He went undrafted in the 2013 MLB draft and went on to play collegiate baseball at the University of Louisville. He played collegiate summer baseball with the Cape Cod Baseball League’s Brewster Whitecaps in 2015.
In 55 games as a junior in 2016, he hit.382/.480/.567 with seven home runs and 43 RBIs. He was drafted in the first round of the 2016 Major League Baseball draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers after his junior year. Smith signed a $1.775 million signing bonus on July 17, 2016.
Smith hit.289/.401/.579 with eight home runs and 25 RBIs in 37 games for the Dodgers during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. Smith had five hits in the third game of the 2020 NLDS against the San Diego Padres, breaking the Dodgers’ franchise mark for most hits in a postseason game.
Will Smith’s wife, Cara Martinell, has been a third-grade teacher for three years. She holds a degree from the University of Louisville.
They attended the same university and began dating as soon as they realized they were compatible. Smith proposed to Cara in the 2019 off-season after four years of dating.
On December 18, 2020, the couple walked down the aisle surrounded by close relatives who followed pandemic regulations.
