Who Is Alex Reyes?

Alexander Reyes is a Major League Baseball pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals. In December 2012, the Cardinals signed him as an amateur free agent, and on August 9, 2016, he made his MLB debut for them.

Baseball America ranked him as the second-best prospect overall in their 2016 mid-season ranking. He was the Cardinals’ top prospect entering both the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

In 2015, he was one of two Cardinals’ Co-Minor League Pitchers of the Year after appearing in two All-Star Futures Games.

Alexander Reyes was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, to Tomás Sr. and Dignora Reyes. He is the youngest of three sons, the others being Tomás Jr. and Adriel.

He was 5 ft 11 in (1.80 m) tall and could throw at a top speed of 87 mph (140 km/h) while attending Elizabeth High School.

He lived in New Jersey until he was eighteen years old. He moved to the Dominican Republic in December 2011 since his family couldn’t afford to send him to showcases and auditions.

If he stayed in the United States, he would have had a far easier time attracting scouts and increasing his prospects of signing as a free agent with a Major League Baseball (MLB) team rather than being selected through the amateur draft.

Reyes resided in San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic, with each of his grandmothers, gaining residence and the attention of scouts, also known as buscones.

Shortstop Ral A. Mondes, the son of former MLB outfielder and San Cristóbal mayor Ral Mondes, worked out with Reyes and attracted the attention of a buscón known only as Valera, who also saw Reyes.

Reyes tried out for Valera before being recognized by Rodney Jiménez, a scout with the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Cardinals saw Reyes working out in San Cristóbal in Palenque, Sabana Grande de Palenque municipality, and asked him to a private exercise at their team academy in Santo Domingo.

He had attained speeds of up to 94 miles per hour (151 kilometers per hour) at that time. Reyes’ athleticism was one crucial quality that prompted the Cardinals to examine him, according to general manager John Mozeliak.

Because Reyes emigrated from the United States, MLB regulations required him to wait one year before signing as an international free agent with an MLB team, delaying the Cardinals’ ability to sign him by six months.

He signed a $950,000 contract with St. Louis in December 2012.
