It was announced on June 18th that the Kansas City Royals acquired Kelvin Herrera in exchange for Gutiérrez, Blake Perkins and Yohan Morel.

As of the start of the 2019 baseball season, Gutiérrez was playing for the Class AAA Omaha Storm Chasers of the Pacific Coast League.

On April 27, 2019, he made his main league debut after batting.333 with two home runs and 10 RBIs in 18 games with Omaha. His batting averages for his first 20 games of the season were.260/.394/.356.

Gutiérrez was a productive hitter for the Kansas City Royals in 2020. He had no home runs and no RBIs in four games and  batted .111

He was brought up from Triple-A Omaha to play in a May 14 doubleheader after third baseman Hunter Dozier was put on a seven-day concussion injured list.

A pinch-hitter on that night, and third baseman on the following night, he was introduced to the team.

Gutiérrez remained the starting third baseman for the next 10 games, batting .270, before Dozier was activated from the injured list on May 28.

It wasn’t long after that he was designated for assignment after hitting just.194 in his final 27 games.
