Carlson was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the first round of the 2016 Major League Baseball draft, despite not being listed among the top 200 draft prospects by MLB.com.

In order to secure a signing bonus of $1.35 million, which was $550,500 less than the slot value, he reneged on his promise to attend California State University-Fullerton.



After a successful season with the Cardinals’ Gulf Coast League affiliate, Carlson made his major league debut the following year.

With the Peoria Chiefs, Carlson slashed .240/.342/.347 with seven home runs and 42 RBIs in 115 games last year.

He began the 2018 season with Peoria and was promoted to the Palm Beach Cardinals after hitting .234 with two home runs and nine RBIs in 13 games.

With Palm Beach, Carlson hit .247/345/386 (nine home runs, 53 RBIs) throughout the course of his final 99 games of the season.

Carlson made his MLB debut with the Springfield Cardinals at the start of the new season.

He was an All-Star in the Texas League and competed in the Home Run Derby, earning the distinction. In July, he joined Nolan Gorman in representing the Cardinals at the 2019 All-Star Futures Game.

The Memphis Redbirds promoted him in August after he had slashed .281/.364/.518 with 21 homers, 59 RBIs, and 18 stolen bases in 108 games with Springfield.

Carlson was voted the Texas League Player of the Year shortly after his promotion. His batting average was.361 with five home runs and nine RBIs in 18 games with the Tigers.

Carlson had a slash line of .292/.372/.542 with 26 home runs, 68 RBIs, and 20 stolen bases in 126 games between Springfield and Memphis.

After the season, he had been selected to play for the Glendale Desert Dogs in the Arizona Fall League, but it was later revealed that he would not be taking part.
