Max played collegiate summer baseball during his freshman year at the University of Missouri where he played with the La Crosse Loggers of the Northwoods League (NWL). The Arizona Diamondbacks drafted him in the first round of the 2006 MLB draft. He signed with the Diamondbacks and made his professional debut in 2007 playing for the Single-A Visalia Oaks.

The Diamondbacks called him up to the major leagues in April 2008 and he made his MLB debut that month when they played against the Houston Astros. He was traded in December 2009 to the Detroit Tigers.
