Howard expressed an interest in playing baseball with the Mustangs in August of 2015, before arriving at Cal Poly.

He was one of 35 players selected to the team after impressing coaches during a fall tryout camp with a pitching velocity of 88 mph (142 km/h).

During his freshman year, Howard decided to take a redshirt so that he could gain more weight.

When he started a yoga-based sports program, he gained 10 pounds (4.5 kilograms) and increased his fastball speed by more than 10 mph (14 kph).

Howard was a member of the Bellingham Bells of the West Coast League during the summer following his freshman year in college.

While working with pitching coach Jim Clem, he developed a new breaking ball and changeup to add variety to his arsenal.
