He was born June 30, 1993, in Boynton Beach, Florida in the United States to Mark and Donna Turner. He started playing baseball when he attended high school at Park Vista Community High School in Florida where he played their baseball team.

When he completed high school, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 20th round of the 2011 MLB draft but he did not sign with them and decided to play college baseball for the North Carolina State Wolfpack baseball team at the North Carolina State University.

In 2014, the San Diego Padres selected him in the first round of the MLB draft. He signed with them for a $2.9 million signing bonus and began playing baseball professionally.

The Padres traded him in December 2014 to the Washington Nationals baseball team. He was promoted by the Nationals to the major leagues in August 2015 and he made his MLB debut that same day for the Nationals.

In July 2021, he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team after which he signed a one-year contract worth $21 million with the Dodgers.
