He has competed in international competition for Canada, capturing a gold medal at the 2015 Pan American Games.

O’Neill is 5’11” (1.80 m) tall, weighs 210 lbs (95 kg), and throws and bats right-handed.

The Seattle Mariners selected O’Neill in the third round of the 2013 MLB draft from the Greater Vancouver area of British Columbia.

In 2016, he was named the Southern League Most Valuable Player (MVP) and led the Jackson Generals to the Southern League championship. The Mariners traded him to the Cardinals on July 21, 2017.

Later the same year, as a member of the Memphis Redbirds, he won the Pacific Coast League championship.

After making his MLB debut with the Cardinals in 2018, O’Neill struggled with injuries and spent two seasons splitting time between St. Louis and the minor levels before becoming the team’s main left fielder in 2020, collecting his first Gold Glove Award.

O’Neill played baseball for the Langley Blaze of the British Columbia Premier Baseball League while attending Garibaldi Secondary School in Maple Ridge, British Columbia.

He grew up as a Seattle Mariners fan. He signed a letter of intent to play college baseball with the Oregon State Beavers.

O’Neill is a pianist who once amused his colleagues in the clubhouse during spring training by playing the “Lord of the Rings” film series’ theme song on a keyboard. “O Canada” is his favorite song to play, according to him.

O’Neill, an avid weightlifter, has been caught on camera quarter-squatting up to 585 pounds (265 kg). While playing in the Southern League, he was given the nickname “Popeye.”

Terry O’Neill, O’Neill’s father, was named Mr. Canada (a title given to the country’s best bodybuilder) in 1975.
