Jason is married to Vedrana Heyward. The couple got married in 2021 and had a son, Messi, in March 2022. Jason had his formal education at Henry County High School in McDonough. He began his professional baseball career when he was 17 years old after he was drafted by the Atlanta Braves team.



The Braves drafted him during the 2007 MLB draft. That season, he played for both the Gulf Coast League Braves and the Danville Braves of the Appalachian League. He accepted to play for the Braves and signed a contract that had a range of $1.7 million and $170,000 with them.

In January 2013, the Braves and Jason agreed on a one-year contract worth $3.65 million to avoid salary arbitrations. He was traded to the St Louis Cardinals in November 2014 after his contract expired and in December 2015, the Chicago Cubs signed him to an eight-year contract worth $184 million.
