On April 30, 2019, Griffin Canning made his debut in the major leagues as the Los Angeles Angels took on the Toronto Blue Jays.

Canning started the game for the Angels. He pitched 4 and third innings, allowed 3 runs, and struck out 6 batters, but he was not factored into the decision.

After being selected by the Angels in the second round in 2017 and coming out of UCLA, Griffin did not make his debut in the major leagues until the following year, giving him a total of only 28 games of experience in the minor leagues at the time.

When he was called up to the major leagues, he had a record of 1-0 and a 1.56 ERA in three starts for the AAA Salt Lake Bees.

He concluded his career with a record of 5-6 and a 4.58 ERA in 18 games (90 1/3 innings), striking out 96 batters.

Because of an extraordinary confluence of events, the Angels roster for the 23rd of June, 2021 had him playing left field against his will.

When the Angels were hosting the San Francisco Giants, they made the decision to let P Shohei Ohtani bat for himself.

This was a justifiable choice given that he was tied for the lead in home runs across all of major league baseball at the time.

However, after he had pitched six innings and then exited the game, they were forced to deploy a couple of substitute hitters whenever his turn to bat came up. As a result, their bench was short as the game went into extra innings.
