Tyron Smith was born in Los Angeles, California to Jerry Lee Smith and Frankie Pinkney. He grew up in Moreno Valley, California, and attended Rancho Verde High School.

Tyron Smith was regarded as one of the best prospects coming out of high school. Smith was listed as the No. 6 offensive tackle prospect and had a rating of five stars from Rivals.com.

As a stand-out student-athlete, he also did well in added track and field aside from being a great football player. Smith had the best throw in the shot put, which was 14.23 meters (46 feet, 7 inches), and the best throw in the discus, which was 46.62 meters (152 feet, 10 inches).

Tyron Smith after high school enrolled at the University of Southern California and played for the USC Trojans from 2008 to 2010.

He was the backup for the left offensive lineman position when he was a freshman and played a total of ten games. He started the first twelve games of the season at right offensive tackle when he was a sophomore.

In 2009, he was named to the honorable mention lists of both the All-Pac-10 and CollegeFootballNews.com’s Sophomore All-American teams.
