The NBCWA and Collegiate Baseball Magazine named him the NCBWA Stopper of the Year and Freshman of the Year. Knebel was named to the First Team All-American as well as the First Team All-Big 12 Conference.

Knebel was the Longhorn closer once again in 2012, recording nine saves and a 2.08 ERA. Despite not being able to equal his rookie season’s achievements, he was named to the Big 12’s first team again.

Knebel was banned from the Longhorns twice in 2013, once for breaking team rules and the other for assisting a teammate in passing a drug test.

Knebel was selected 39th overall in the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft by the Detroit Tigers. The first traded draft slot in Major League history was this supplemental pick.

The pick was part of a 2012 transaction that includes Anibal Sánchez, Omar Infante, and Jacob Turner between the Tigers and the Miami Marlins.

Before getting called up by the Tigers, Knebel played for the Class-A West Michigan Whitecaps, Double-A Erie SeaWolves, and Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens.

On May 24, 2014, he made his major league debut against the Texas Rangers.
