Steven R. Cishek is a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Washington Nationals. He recently played for the Florida / Miami Marlins, St. Louis Cardinals, Seattle Mariners, Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, and Los Angeles Angels in the Major League Baseball (MLB).

Cishek was born and reared in Falmouth, Massachusetts, and attended Falmouth High School, where he was a standout pitcher and basketball player.

Cishek attended Division II Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee, after being overlooked by Division I schools. He led the squad to a conference championship in 2007.

Cishek was drafted in the fifth round of the 2007 MLB draft by the Florida Marlins. On September 20, 2010, Cishek was called up to the MLB for the first time.

Toward the end of the season, he tossed 4+13 scoreless innings.

 

Cishek was recalled to the Marlins on May 24, 2011, after Jay Buente was designated for assignment. Heath Bell was demoted as the team’s closer in 2012, and Cishek took over for roughly a week.

Bell recovered the closer’s role after a few relief appearances. Bell was relegated to a relief pitcher after nearly two months as the closer, and Cishek was reassigned to the post.
