Dustin May’s News

A return for May isn’t likely for some time while she recovers from Tommy John’s surgery.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have a plethora of young, skilled pitchers. Dustin May is a contender for the number one spot.

This season, May is recuperating from Tommy John surgery and has a 2.84 ERA in 19 starts in the last three seasons.

It’s still unclear when May will be ready to pitch again for the Dodgers after providing video updates on his recovery during the lockout.

That’s why, according to Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register, the Dodgers have moved May on their official roster.

Dustin May’s Scout Report

He can reach speeds of up to 100 mph with a hard, sinking fastball that rests in the upper 90s. Ground balls are often with this pitch, which bores right-handed hitters.

He is able to shift his grip and throw it up in the strike zone with some success. It’s been hard to decide what his best-offspeed pitch is.

His improved, hard-biting cutter has been credited by some, while his high-spin curveball has been credited by others.

In terms of getting ground balls, his curveball is a better pitch than his fastball. Breaker 12-6 with a low-80s score. When he gets it right, it’s a really effective weapon.

He has a tendency to leave it up in the strike zone at times. With a cutter/slider hybrid that is in the low-90s, he misses lots of bats with this pitch.

Both left- and right-handed players can benefit from it. There is also an 80-degree changeup that is more of a “show me” pitch at this point in the game for him. He may not need it in the future if he has three good pitches.

May is able to use his high leg kick due to his superior athleticism. In a slinging motion, he throws his pitches from a three-quarters arm slot without losing his balance (think of a Brown-Jake Peavy hybrid).

It aids in his sinking of the hook. As a result, he has one of the most effective command/control profiles in the system.
