Nicholas Mackie Hoerner is a Major League Baseball shortstop for the Chicago Cubs in the United States.

He was drafted by the Cubs in the first round of the 2018 Major League Baseball draft after playing college baseball at Stanford University. In 2019, he made his MLB debut.



Hoerner played soccer, basketball, and baseball at Head-Royce School in Oakland, California.

He was a four-year member of the varsity baseball team, and as a senior in 2015, he batted .517 with six home runs, 30 RBIs, and 40 runs scored.

In the 2015 Major League Baseball draft, he was not selected out of high school. Hoerner subsequently went on to Stanford University, where he played college baseball for the Cardinal.

Hoerner started 53 of Stanford’s 54 games at second base as a rookie in 2016, hitting. With 53 hits, 24 RBIs, and eight doubles, he batted 254 times.

He played in the Northwoods League after the season, hitting .304 in 257 at-bats with two home runs, 31 RBIs, 11 stolen bases, and 12 doubles.

Hoerner moved positions as a sophomore at Stanford in 2017, shifting to shortstop. That year, he started all 58 of Stanford’s games and slashed.

With 18 doubles, one home run, and 33 RBIs, he hit.307/.357/.406. All-Pac-12 and All-Pac-12 Defensive teams were named to Hoerner.

That summer, he was a member of the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox of the Cape Cod Baseball League, where he batted .301 hits, 30 RBIs, 16 stolen bases, and eight doubles earned him a league all-star nod.

Hoerner batted.345 as a junior in 2018, with two home runs and 40 RBIs.
