Michael Austin Riley is a Major League Baseball third baseman for the Atlanta Braves in the United States. Riley was picked in the first round of the 2015 MLB Draft by the Braves, and he made his MLB debut in 2019.
Riley played baseball for DeSoto Central High School, where he was a shortstop and pitcher. Riley was committed to play baseball for the Mississippi State Bulldogs until the Atlanta Braves selected him in 2015.
Riley was selected 41st overall in the first round of the 2015 MLB draft by the Atlanta Braves out of DeSoto Central High School in Southaven, Mississippi.
Riley elected to sign with the Braves for $1.6 million despite being committed to the Mississippi State Bulldogs baseball club. That season, Riley made his professional debut with the Gulf Coast Braves.
He was promoted to the Appalachian League’s Danville Braves after 30 games. In 60 games, he batted .304/.389/.544 with 12 home runs in 217 at-bats, while making 16 mistakes for a fielding percentage of .908 on defense.
He hit .271/.324/.479 with the Rome Braves in 2016. He had 30 mistakes at third base on defense.
Riley spent some time in spring training with the Atlanta Braves before starting the 2017 season with the Florida Fire Frogs. In July, he was promoted to the Mississippi Braves.
Riley hit .275/.339/.446 with 20 home runs and 74 RBIs in 129 games between Florida and Mississippi, while making 20 errors at third base.
At the conclusion of the minor league regular season, he was sent to the Peoria Javelinas of the Arizona Fall League.
Riley was invited to spring training before the start of the 2018 season. Prior to the season, he was considered one of the best minor league prospects.
He began 2018 with Mississippi and was promoted to the Gwinnett Stripers in May after hitting.333 with six home runs and 20 RBIs in 27 games.
He hit .282/.346/.464/.810 with 12 home runs and 47 RBI in 75 games with Gwinnett. He started the 2019 season with the Gwinnett Braves.
