The New York Jets’ 2021 free agent acquisition of Corey Davis was the most disappointing to play for the team. Davis was by no means the Jets’ poorest player, but when fan expectations are taken into account, he is in the running for the team’s worst performer.
The 27-year-old former fifth-round pick Davis was selected out of Tennessee as a primary pass catcher. Davis, who averaged 54.7 yards per game when healthy, was statistically New York’s best receiver, but that was only possible due to the sheer number of targets he received. Davis wasn’t exceptional; he was simply targeted frequently.
Early on in the season, the former Titan faced a lot of opposition (42 of his 59 targets came in Weeks 1-6). However, that took place as a result of the Jets’ ongoing offensive identity crisis. Elijah Moore and Michael Carter were just starting out as a team. Rookie Zach Wilson was still getting a handle on the offense.
Nevertheless, Davis only managed 34 catches over the course of nine games throughout the season, with 24 of those coming in the first six weeks. Even with only nine games, it was a below-average season and far below what the Jets had anticipated from him.
