Newcomb attended the University of Hartford after graduating from high school. Newcomb started nine games for the Hartford Hawks baseball team as a freshman in 2012 before sustaining a season-ending injury.

His first college victory came against Yale, when he pitched a no-hitter. With a 2–4 record, a 4.17 ERA, and 45 strikeouts in 45+13 innings, he concluded the season with a 4.17 ERA. He started 12 of 13 games as a sophomore, finishing 5–4 with a 3.75 ERA and 92 strikeouts in 72 innings.



The Braves’ first game at SunTrust Park in 2019 was started by Newcomb. He played for the Chicago Cubs and won 8–0 in four innings. He pitched the eighth inning against the Miami Marlins in his following game, but struggled against the New York Mets, prompting his demotion to the Gwinnett Stripers on April 14.

On May 4, Newcomb returned to the major league club and appeared in a few relief outings. On June 15, 2019, he returned to the starting rotation against the Philadelphia Phillies. J. T. Realmuto hit Newcomb in the head with a batted ball, and he exited the game.
