He was born on September 3, 1995, in Arcadia, California in the United States of America. He played high school baseball at Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora, Colorado. In 2013 while he was still in high school, he played in the Under Armour All-America Baseball Game at Wrigley Field.

The Boston Red Sox drafted him in the 2014 MLB draft, but he did not sign with them and enrolled at the University of Oregon, where he played college baseball for the Ducks. After college, he was drafted by the New York Mets in the first round of the 2017 MLB draft. He signed with the Mets and started his professional career that year after he was assigned to the Brooklyn Cyclones.

During the 2018 baseball season, MLB.com ranked him as New York’s second-best prospect. For the 2018 minor league season, David spent the season with the Columbia Fireflies and was promoted to the St. Lucie Mets in June. The Mets added him to their 40-man roster in July 2020. He made his MLB debut that same day, against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.
