Kirby Yates

Kirby Kali Yates (born March 25, 1987) is a Major League Baseball pitcher who currently pitches for the Atlanta Braves.

He has played for the Tampa Bay Rays, Los Angeles Angels, New York Yankees, and San Diego Padres in Major League Baseball (MLB). He debuted in Major League Baseball in 2014 and was named an All-Star in 2019, leading the National League in saves.

Yates signed with the Tampa Bay Rays after going undrafted in 2009. Yates pitched for the Montgomery Biscuits in Double-A in 2012, posting a 2.65 ERA and 94 strikeouts in 68 innings pitched across 50 games. Yates was a Triple-A All-Star in 2013, pitching 51 games for the Durham Bulls and posting a 1.90 ERA.

On November 20, 2013, Yates was added to the Rays’ 40-man roster. Yates made his big league debut on June 7, 2014, after being called up for the first time. In 37 innings pitched, he had a 3.75 ERA while striking out 42 batters.

He struggled the next season, having an ERA of 7.97 in 20+13 innings for the Major League team while bouncing between Tampa and Durham. After the 2015 season, the Rays designated Yates for assignment.

Yates signed a two-year, $8.25 million contract with the Atlanta Braves on November 29, 2021.
