First Coast High School was Johnson’s high school of choice while he was a student there. He rushed for 398 yards and nine touchdowns as a senior, adding to his 3,710 passing yards and 47 passing touchdowns. He was awarded Florida’s “Mr. Football” and the Class 8A Player of the Year.

In the summer before his sophomore year, Johnson turned down offers from Florida and Clemson to play collegiate football at Florida State.

In the NFL Draft of 2020, Johnson was not selected. He played six games for the Sea Lions in The Spring League in 2021, passing for 574 yards with five touchdowns and seven interceptions.

New Jersey Generals made Johnson their first-round pick in the 2022 USFL Draft. Following Luis Perez, he was designated as the backup. Johnson was frequently employed in different offensive sets in the USFL debut, as he carried for a game-high 98 yards and one score on 12 rushes while also completing 3 of 8 throws for 59 yards in a 24-28 loss to the Birmingham Stallions.
