Steven Jakob Matz is a Major League Baseball pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals in the United States. He has played for the New York Mets and the Toronto Blue Jays in the past.

Matz grew up on Long Island and attended Ward Melville High School in East Setauket, New York, where he played baseball.

The Mets selected him in the second round of the 2009 MLB draft, with the 72nd overall pick, straight out of high school.

Matz’s professional career was delayed two years due to Tommy John surgery to repair a tear in his pitching elbow’s ulnar collateral ligament.

Matz debuted in the major leagues in 2012 and spent three years in the Mets’ minor levels, where he helped the Savannah Sand Gnats and Binghamton Mets win championships.

In 2014, he was named Organizational Pitcher of the Year by the Mets. On June 28, 2015, he made his MLB debut, shattering multiple hitting records in his maiden start.

Matz pitched in three 2015 playoff games, including Game 4 of the World Series against the Kansas City Royals, after posting a 4–0 win-loss record and 2.27 ERA in an injury-shortened regular season.

Matz started 2016 with a 7–1 record, and by the end of May, he led all rookie pitchers in wins, ERA, and strikeouts.

In May, he was voted National League Rookie of the Month and was a strong contender for NL Rookie of the Year before his season was cut short once more due to ailments, including a bone spur that required surgery to remove.
