A seven-year deal worth a total of $27 million was signed by him on June 27, 2014, including a $5 million signing bonus.

The fact that he could put together a quality four-pitch outing surprised the Reds. That season, he appeared solely in the Arizona Fall League.

His professional career began with a straight shot to the majors. It wasn’t until spring training that the Reds urged him to switch from relief to start, which led to his being called up and winning the starting spot out of the gate.

On April 12th, he made his major league debut against the St. Louis Cardinals and threw four scoreless innings until getting into difficulty in the fifth inning, allowing three runs.

He was unable to come to a choice. For four starts in the minors, he was then called back up and made a one-off start on May 13th, as a result of an abundance of rainouts and doubleheaders in the Reds’ schedule.
