For his college baseball career, he first attended the University of Oklahoma in 2010, where he pitched for the Oklahoma Sooners baseball team. The following year he left the University of Oklahoma for Navarro College, where he was a member of the 2011 National Junior College Athletic Association JUCO World Series championship team.
Drew finally transferred to Vanderbilt University in 2012 to play for the Vanderbilt Commodores. After he completed, he was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 4th round of the 2012 MLB Draft. He signed with the Detroit and made his professional debut that year playing in both the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League for the Gulf Coast League Tigers and the Lakeland Flying Tigers of the Class A-Advanced Florida State League.
In 2013, he again played for both the Lakeland and the Erie SeaWolves of the Class AA Eastern League. The Tigers invited him to their spring training in 2014. He was called up to the majors that year and he made his MLB debut for the Tigers on July 19, 2014, in a game against the Cleveland Indians.
