New wide receiver Kendrick Bourne has signed with the New England Patriots, and the terms of his contract have been made public. Sometimes the details shed different light than the big picture does.
Initially, it was claimed that Bourne had signed a three-year, $22.5 million contract with the Patriots. In reality, though, the base value is $15 million and the guarantee is only $5.25 million. By the end of the first year, Bourne will have received all of his promised compensation.
However, Bourne can make a lot more money than simply the guaranteed amount through a variety of other opportunities.
Every game Bourne plays in for the next three years will bring him closer to the $15 million that would be his share of the salary cap. The remaining $7.5 million is contingent upon bonuses and wage increases.
If Bourne meets his catch and yardage goals, he can earn an additional $1.5 million each year, as reported by Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. In addition, in 2023, his base compensation will increase to $3 million.
Once the incentives are deemed “not likely to be earned,” only Bourne’s salary and bonuses will count toward the 2021 limit.
