Yan Gomes is a professional baseball player in Major League Baseball who plays as a catcher for the Chicago Cubs baseball team. He was July 19, 1987, in São Paulo in Brazil. His parents are Claudia and Décio.



Gomes played baseball in high school at the Miami Southridge High School in Miami, Florida. After his high school education and amateur career, he went on to play college baseball for the Tennessee Volunteers in the Southeastern Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) Division at the University of Tennessee.

Gomes played collegiate summer baseball for the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2007. In 2008, the Boston Red Sox team drafted him in the 39th round of the 2008 MLB draft whiles he was still in college.



He did not sign with them and left the University of Tennessee for Barry University, where he continued his college baseball career by playing for the Barry Buccaneers in the Sunshine State Conference.

In 2009, the Toronto Blue Jays drafted him in the tenth round of the 2009 MLB Draft. He signed with the Jays and made his professional debut with the Gulf Coast Blue Jays of the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League. He made his MLB debut in May 2012 for the Jays.

The Chicago Cubs signed a two-year contract with him in December 2021. The contract came with a club option for the 2024 baseball season.
