Giovanny Gallegos’s Career with the Cardinals

The New York Yankees traded Gallegos and Chasen Shreve to the St. Louis Cardinals on July 27, 2018, in exchange for Luke Voit and bonus pool money.

He was assigned to the Memphis Redbirds by the Cardinals, where he spent the remainder of the season before being promoted to the Cardinals in late September of that year.

Gallegos began the year with a win in Memphis. On April 7, he was recalled to the St. Louis area.

As a relief pitcher, Gallegos earned his first Major League Baseball victory on April 11 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, pitching 1+1/3 innings in relief.

When he was assigned to Memphis on April 15, he was immediately called back, and he ended up spending the rest of the season in St. Louis, where he finished the season.

Gallegos had a 3–2 record with a 2.31 earned run average in 66 bullpen appearances during the 2019 regular season, striking out 93 batters in 74 innings.

Gallegos missed time in the 2020 season after testing positive for COVID-19 and suffering a groin injury. He only tossed 15 innings during the season, going 2–2 with a 3.60 ERA.

He was a crucial element of the Cardinals’ bullpen in 2021, and he transitioned from the setup job to the closer role in late August.

He appeared in 73 games, and he finished the season with a 6-5 record, a 3.02 ERA, 95 strikeouts, and 14 saves in 80+1/3 relief innings thrown.
