Drew was born and raised in Texas on October 22, 1990, in Royse City, Texas in the USA. He had his high school baseball career at Rockwall-Heath High School in Heath, Texas. Drew attended three different colleges where he played for each one of their baseball teams.

He graduated from college in 2012 and was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 4th round of the 2012 MLB Draft. Drew agreed to play for the Tigers and signed with them. He then started his professional career that very year when he played in both the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League for the Gulf Coast League Tigers and the Lakeland Flying Tigers of the Class A-Advanced Florida State League.

During the 2013 minor league season, he played for both the Lakeland and the Erie SeaWolves of the Class AA Eastern League. The Tigers promoted him to the major leagues in July 2014 and he made his MLB debut on July 19, 2014, when the Tigers played versus the Cleveland Indians.
