Marcell was promoted to the major leagues in April 2013 and on April 30, 2013, he made his MLB debut for the Marlins. He was traded to the St Louis Cardinals in December 2017 and in January 2018, the Cardinals and Marcell agreed on a one-year contract worth $9 million. Marcell signed a one-year contract in January 2020 with the Atlanta Braves. The contract was worth $18 million.
