What is a 49er woman?

Originally used to refer to someone who participated in the 1849 California gold rush, the term “forty-niner” is now frequently associated with the San Francisco 49ers football club.

The Bay Area is experiencing a phenomenon known as “49er Syndrome,” which at first primarily afflicted single females between the ages of 21 and 35.

Because of the gold rush, California’s population grew rapidly, and in 1850 it was admitted as a state.

In Silicon Valley today, it affects people of all ages, male and female. In case you’re confused, a “4-9er” is a lady who thinks she is a “9” but is actually an average woman (a “4”).

It was simple for women to believe they were in high demand due to Silicon Valley’s massively skewed male-to-female ratio (caused by the inflow of largely male engineers, coders, etc. pouring into the Bay Area to work in start-ups and tech giants like Google/Apple/Facebook).
