Alfonso grew up in Chula Vista, California in the United States of America. He started his amateur baseball career at La Jolla Country Day School in La Jolla, California.  He graduated in 2015 and enrolled at the University of Arizona when he was not drafted after high school.

He played college baseball for the University and in 2017, he played in the Cape Cod Baseball League for the Yarmouth–Dennis Red Sox. In 2018, he was selected by the Oakland Athletics during the fourth round of the 2018 MLB draft.

Alfonso agreed to play for the Athletics and signed with them. He began his professional career after he was assigned to play with the Vermont Lake Monsters of the Class A Short Season New York–Penn League. He spent the 2019 season playing for the Stockton Ports of the Class A-Advanced California League.

The Athletics traded him to the Chicago Cubs in January 2020. That season, he did not play in a game due to the cancellation of the minor league season because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Cubs promoted him to the major leagues in August 2021. Alfonso made his MLB debut the next day when the Cubs played versus the Chicago White Sox.
