Ward Melville High School in East Setauket, New York, is where Matz grew up and where he played baseball. After he graduated from high school, he was selected by the Mets in the second round of the 2009 MLB draft, as the 72nd overall pick.

Tommy John’s surgery delayed Matz’s professional career by two years because of a tear in the ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing elbow.

In 2012, Matz made his major league debut with the New York Mets’ minor league affiliates, the Savannah Sand Gnats, and the Binghamton Mets.

This year’s Organizational Pitcher of the Year was him. On June 28, 2015, he made his Major League Baseball debut, and he promptly broke a slew of hit records in his first at-bat.

Before being sidelined for the entire 2014 season due to injury, Matz had a 4–0 record and a 2.27 earned run average in three playoff appearances, including Game 4 of the 2015 World Series.
