On February 9, 2016, Byrd signed a reserve/futures deal with the Panthers. That contract went into effect immediately.

Byrd was one of the 53 players to make the initial roster for the 2016 season, however, he did not play in any of the first five games before being cut on October 14, 2016.

The next day, he was given a spot on the team’s practice squad after being re-signed. On December 29, 2016, he received a promotion that brought him back into the active roster.

On October 1, 2017, while playing against the New England Patriots, Byrd broke his left arm on a reverse play. The injury occurred during the second quarter of the game.

Two days later, he was transferred to the injured reserve section of the team.
