Seth Lugo attended Parkway High School in Bossier City, Louisiana, and Centenary College of Louisiana, where he was a member of the Centenary Gentlemen.



Lugo has a 5.31 earned run average in three seasons with Centenary. The New York Mets picked him in the 34th round of the 2011 MLB draft, with the 1,032nd overall pick. He agreed to terms with the Mets and received a $20,000 signing bonus.

Lugo was sidelined for the whole 2012 season due to spondylolisthesis, which necessitated spinal fusion surgery. He remained bedridden at his mother’s house for three months following the treatment.



In 2013, he pitched for the Brooklyn Cyclones of the Class A-Short Season New York–Penn League and the Savannah Sand Gnats of the Class A South Atlantic League, posting a 4–6 record with a 3.39 ERA in 12 games.

In 2014, he played for the Class A-Advanced Florida State League’s St. Lucie Mets, and in 2015, he pitched for the Class AA Eastern League’s Binghamton Mets and the Class AAA Pacific Coast League’s Las Vegas 51s. After the 2015 season, he was added to the Mets’ 40-man roster.
