With a 2-2 record and 3.83 ERA in his first 14 games back in the DSL in 2015, he did well (ten starts). He began the 2016 campaign with the Greeneville Astros before being moved to the Gulf Coast League’s Astros.

The Astros added Abreu to their 40-man roster following the 2018 season. Before being promoted to the Corpus Christi Hooks, the team for which he was chosen as a Texas League All-Star, he began the 2019 campaign with the Fayetteville Woodpeckers.

The Astros promoted Abreu to the major leagues on July 31, 2019. That evening, he pitched a scoreless inning of relief pitching to make his major league debut.

He was optioned back to Double-A Corpus Christi the next day. Abreu had trouble being accurate in 2020, walking seven batters and hitting two before being optioned off the roster.

Abreu has been called to the roster as he replaces Pedro Baez, who was placed on the injured list on Tuesday due to right shoulder pain and will lose his roster position to him.
