Growing up, Jason had his formal education at Henry County High School in McDonough near Atlanta. He began his professional baseball career when he was 17 years old. He played in minor leagues for the Atlanta Braves team.



Jason was drafted by the Braves in the 14th overall selection of the 2007 MLB draft. That season, he played for both the Gulf Coast League Braves and the Danville Braves of the Appalachian League.

He accepted to play for the Braves and signed a contract worth $1.7 million to $170,000 with them. This contract was more than MLB’s slot recommendation of $1.53 million. He made his MLB debut in 2010 for the Braves.

In January 2013, the Braves and Jason agreed on a one-year contract worth $3.65 million to avoid arbitrations. He was traded to the St Louis Cardinals in November 2014 after his contract expired and in December 2015, the Chicago Cubs came signing him to an eight-year contract of $184 million.
