In January 2016, Rondón signed for $25,000 out of the Dominican Republic and needed two-and-a-half seasons before moving up to full-season ball.
After posting a 2.93 ERA with 159 strikeouts in 160 innings between High-A and Double-A, he was awarded Cardinals Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2019.
For his age-23 season, he promoted to Triple-A and had a more pedestrian season (4.58 ERA, 68 strikeouts in 76 2/3 innings), although he did make his Major League debut in June with a pair of relief appearances.
In those two MLB appearances, the 6-foot-1 right-heater hander’s averaged 93.1 mph, which is similar to where his fastball was in the Minors.
When needed, he can reach the mid-90s, and his fastball has some natural deception and late movement.
Because of a low-80s disappearing changeup, Rondón pitches a bit backwards, with considerably superior splits versus lefties than righties (.223 average-against vs..329, respectively, at Triple-A).
His slider and curveball may both flash average, with the former looking somewhat better than the latter at this point, but both have poor spin rates and can hang a little too much, resulting in right-handed batters punishing him.
