Jose Alvarez

José Ricardo Alvarez is a Venezuelan professional baseball pitcher who currently plays for the San Francisco Giants in the Major League Baseball. Alvarez was born on May 6, 1989.

He started his career with the Detroit Tigers and went on to play for the Los Angeles Angels and the Philadelphia Phillies.

In 2005, the Boston Red Sox decided to take a chance on him and sign him as an international free agent. During his time in the minor levels, Alvarez was recognized as a mid-season All-Star in both the New York–Penn League and the Florida State League in 2009 and 2011, respectively.

He was honored with the title of Pitcher of the Year in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League during the winter of 2014–2015. 2013 was the year he made his debut in the main leagues. With 76 plate appearances in 2018, he finished the year in second place in the American League.

On March 6, 2021, Alvarez signed a one-year contract with the San Francisco Giants worth a total of $1.15 million. The deal also contained a club option worth $1.5 million for the year 2022.

Alvarez finished the 2021 regular season with a record of 5–2 and a career-best ERA of 2.37. He appeared in 67 games (one of which was a start) and pitched 642.3 innings, allowing 7.4 hits for every 9 innings worked.
