Hamlet, North Carolina is the place where Ingram spent his childhood. He received his secondary education at Richmond Senior High School, which is located in Rockingham, North Carolina.

He finished his career as a senior linebacker with 87 tackles and 2.5 sacks to his name.



Ingram received his education at the University of South Carolina, where he participated in football under the direction of Steve Spurrier for the South Carolina Gamecocks from 2007 to 2011.

Before moving to the defensive end position for the Gamecocks, he was a linebacker for the team. In 2010, the year he was a junior, he led the team in sacks with nine.

All-American honors were bestowed upon him during his time while playing collegiate football for the University of South Carolina.

During the 2012 NFL Draft, the San Diego Chargers chose him early in the first round with the 18th overall choice. Additionally, he has played football for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
