Is Jordan Lyles Good?

The Texas Rangers’ decision to sign Jordan Lyles to a two-year deal following the 2019 season was a flop.

As an oddity, Lyles was dealt with the Brewers at the 2019 trade deadline with a -2.7 bWAR in his career, having just ended his ninth season in the majors at the age of 28.

Lyles had a 1.8 bWAR in 58.2 innings of work while with the Brewers, despite a 2.45 ERA and a 4.42 FIP.

In spite of that, the Rangers gave him a two-year, $16 million contract because they liked what they saw in the final two months of the year.

It was a surprising decision, but he’d be the team’s fifth starter behind Lance Lynn, Mike Minor, Corey Kluber, and Kyle Gibson, so maybe there was something to it.

As it turned out, there was nothing there. In the short 2020 season, Lyles had a 7.02 ERA.

Even though there was speculation in spring training 2021 that Lyles could be employed as a multi-inning reliever, as a starter in a tandem setup, or even as an opener on a regular basis, Lyles pitched 180 innings in 2021 across 30 starts and two relief appearances, despite these predictions.
