Villar’s professional career began when he signed as a free agent with the Philadelphia Phillies of Major League Baseball. He was later dealt with the Houston Astros, along with two other players, for Roy Oswalt. Before the 2011 season, Baseball America ranked Villar as the 94th greatest prospect in baseball when he joined the Houston Astros. On July 21, 2013, he was promoted from the minors to the majors.
He was then traded to the Milwaukee Brewers of Major League Baseball on November 19, 2015. He earned a place with them and became their Opening Day Shortstop. He very much gave impressive performance whiles with them and that was evident when he recorded a post. 298 batting average, with 6 home runs and a League-leading.
He then moved to the Baltimore Orioles on July 31, 2018, and gained his activation on August 2 playing his first game with the Orioles later that night. Then he was with the Miami Marlins, the Toronto Blue Jays, and the New York Mets, and finally settled at Chicago Cubs on March 19, 2022.
