What were the Texans called before?

Located in Houston, the Houston Texans play professional American football. The Texans play their home games at NRG Stadium in the American Football Conference (AFC) South division of the National Football League.

The Texans were established in 1999, and Bob McNair owned them until his passing in 2018. After that, his wife, Janice, acquired the bulk of the team’s shares.

The Houston Oilers, an NFL team who competed in the city from 1960 to 1996 before moving to Nashville and later changing their name to the Tennessee Titans, were replaced by the new team.



The Texans are the NFL’s newest franchise, having only entered the league as an expansion team in 2002.

The Houston Texans’ history began in 2002 when they brought the National Football League back to Houston, Texas, after the city’s former team, the Houston Oilers, moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where they later changed their name to the Tennessee Titans.

In front of tens of thousands of spectators during a ceremony in Houston’s downtown on September 6, 2000, the 32nd NFL team was formally named the “Houston Texans.”
