With one scoreless appearance in one game for the Gulf Coast League Astros, the team advanced him to the Tri-City ValleyCats for the final six innings of his rookie season with a 4.50 earned run average.

While pitching for the Quad Cities River Bandits, Buies Creek Astros, and Corpus Christi Hooks in 2018, Bukauskas also pitched in the Gulf Coast League and with the ValleyCats, earning a combined 4–2 record with a 2.14 ERA in 14 starts between the five organizations.

His 2019 season began in Corpus Christi.

On July 31, 2019, the Arizona Diamondbacks acquired Bukauskas in exchange for Zack Greinke (along with Corbin Martin, Seth Beer, Joshua Rojas, and monetary considerations).

He was sent to the Jackson Generals, where he played out the rest of the season.

He compiled a 2-5 record and a 5.44 ERA in 16 appearances with the two teams. Bukauskas was added to the 40-man roster on November 20, 2020.

Bukauskas was promoted to the major leagues for the first time on April 18, 2021. On April 20, he made his MLB debut against the Cincinnati Reds, striking out the only player he faced.
