He was a student at Ensworth High. At the University of California, Los Angeles, he participated in collegiate football for the UCLA Bruins football team. In the sixth round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots selected McDermott with the 211st overall pick. On September 2, 2017, he was released by the Patriots.
