Is Marwin Gonzalez Still Playing Baseball?

Marwin Gonzalez

Marwin had a productive winter with Caracas in 2010-2011, hitting .324/.416/.424 with 33 walks and 41 runs in 59 games.

Gregor Blanco and Jackson Melian were his closest rivals in the Venezuelan League in terms of batting average (4th), on-base percentage (5th), runs (tied for first with Alexi Amarista) and walks (fourth) (7th, between Melian and Kroeger).

The switch-hitter hit .301/.359/.421 in 64 games for the Tennessee Titans and.274/.326/.376 in 60 games for the Iowa Cubs this summer, totaling 30 doubles.

Two-baggers tied him with Steve Clevenger and Justin Bour in Cubs history, tying him for seventh place. He had a .292/.339/.337 batting average for the Leones in the winter.

Since 2011, Gonzalez has been a free agent after being drafted and then traded to Houston for Marco Duarte by Boston Red Sox in the 2011 Rule V Draft.

On Opening Day in 2012, he started at shortstop for the Houston Astros, although he went hitless in three at-bats against the Colorado Rockies after being called up from spring training.

He struck out on a fly against Jeremy Guthrie in his first MLB at-bat.  He doubled off Jamie Moyer in the fifth and later scored on a hit by Jordan Schafer in the sixth inning.

Before Gonzalez was born, Moyer had already pitched in the majors for three seasons! Rhiner Cruz was the second one of the Astros’ two Rule V draft picks to make the team, which is unusual.

A dramatic fall on August 30th, when he fell over the first base bag while trying to beat out a ground ball, garnered headlines.

An oddly-timed strike on his left shoulder caused him to go flying and land on his left shoulder, but he managed to walk away from the field of his own power, with only a mild sprained ankle to show for it.

The overall stat line for him as a rookie hitter was .234/.280/.327, with 47 appearances at shortstop, 14 at third and six at second base.
