Alex was born on October 7, 1987, in Boston, Massachusetts in the United States of America. Alex played high school baseball at Vero Beach High School where he served as a pitcher in his junior year. During his senior year, he was named the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers All-Area Baseball Player of the year.

In 2006, Alex was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team in the 4th round of the 2006 MLB draft. He was made to play in their farm system from 2006 to 2010. The Rays promoted him to the major leagues for the very first time in May 2011. He made his MLB debut that same day he was promoted to the Rays.



Alex played for the Rays till March 2018 when the Baltimore Orioles team and Alex agreed on a four-year contract worth $57 million. When this contract expired in 2021, the Orioles traded him to the Los Angeles Angels.

That same year in November, the San Francisco Giants signed a two-year contract worth $20 million with him. The contract came with a $10 million club option for his third season.
